Live Translator is a voice translator that lets two people who speak different languages have a conversation on one Android phone. It translates speech and typed text between 11 languages in real time, and it's free: no subscription, no in-app purchases, no account.
WHAT'S IN THE APP
• 11 languages in any pair: English, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian. The menus come in the same 11.
• Hold-to-talk is the default: hold the mic while you speak and let go when you're done. Or switch to live mode, which listens hands-free and waits for each speaker to finish, so a short pause doesn't cut a sentence in half.
• Words appear as you speak; the translation follows when the turn ends, next to the original.
• Read-aloud with the phone's text-to-speech voices, per line or automatically; quality depends on the voices installed.
• Type in either language when speaking isn't an option.
• Copy a translation, share both languages, or show it in large text.
• Table view for two people sitting face to face, and larger text sizes.
• History encrypted and stored on the phone; delete it any time.
• Optional audio recording, off by default, saved only on the phone.
MADE FOR
• Travellers in Japan, Italy, Spain or Mexico asking for directions or checking in.
• Families in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth where the grandparents speak Chinese, Italian or Polish and the grandkids mostly speak English.
• Working holidaymakers sharing a job, a farm or a hostel with people from Europe and Asia.
• Couples and in-laws who share a few words, not a whole language.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is there an app that translates a conversation in real time?
Live Translator is a conversation translator for two people sharing one Android phone, each speaking their own language. It waits for each speaker to finish, then shows the translation next to the original and can read it aloud. It covers 11 languages, so check that both of yours are on the list.
Is there a free translator app without a subscription?
Live Translator is free on Android, with no subscription, no in-app purchases and no account. Each live session lasts up to 30 minutes, and you can start a new one straight away.
What languages does Live Translator translate?
Live Translator translates between English, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian, in any pair. Other languages are not supported.
What's a good translator app for a trip to Japan?
Live Translator translates spoken English and Japanese both ways, which helps with directions, menus or a problem at check-in. Set one side to English and the other to Japanese and take turns speaking. It needs mobile data or Wi-Fi, so sort out a SIM or roaming before you fly out.
Does Live Translator work offline?
No. Live Translator needs an internet connection, because speech recognition and translation run in the cloud. It does not translate phone calls, photos or documents.
Can I use a translator app at the doctor?
Live Translator can help with small talk at reception, but machine translation can make mistakes and it does not replace a qualified interpreter. For medical, legal or emergency conversations, ask for a professional interpreter; in Australia, TIS National can arrange one, often at no cost to the patient.
Does Live Translator save my conversations?
Live Translator keeps your history encrypted on the phone until you delete it. Speech and text are processed in the cloud during translation. By default the text of translations, never audio, is kept for up to 7 days to fix mistakes; you can turn this off in Settings.
