Frank Worsley

Frank Arthur Worsley was a New Zealand-born sailor, explorer, and naval officer best remembered as captain of the Endurance during Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Born in 1872, Worsley went to sea as a teenager and developed exceptional skills in navigation and seamanship that would prove crucial during one of the most famous survival stories in the history of exploration. After the Endurance was trapped and crushed by Antarctic ice, Worsley helped navigate the crew through months of extraordinary hardship. His greatest feat came during the open-boat voyage from Elephant Island to South Georgia, when he navigated the tiny James Caird across roughly 800 miles of some of the most dangerous ocean on Earth. Worsley later served with distinction during the First World War and wrote several books about his adventures. He died in 1943.
