Andrea Stewart writes fiction and nonfiction about the craft of storytelling. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and has spent the past twelve years teaching novel-writing workshops for emerging authors. Her debut novel, *The Bone Shard Daughter*, was published by Orbit Books and became a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Series, the World Fantasy Award, and the Nebula Award for Best Novel. She has since published three additional novels and numerous short stories in venues including *Clarkesworld*, *The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction*, and *Beneath Ceaseless Skies*. A former technical writer and software engineer, Andrea brings a systems-thinking approach to the art of storytelling, treating narrative structure as something that can be learned, practiced, and mastered—not a mystical gift reserved for a chosen few. She lives in California with her family, two cats with strong opinions about her work schedule, and a growing collection of notebooks filled with abandoned first chapters. She believes that everyone has a novel in them, but only those who sit down and write it will ever know for sure. *Your First Novel* is the book she wished she had when she began her own journey as a writer.
