About this ebook

In 1094, a Castilian nobleman took the city of Valencia for himself, not for any king, and ruled it at the head of an army that included both Christian and Muslim soldiers. That man was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, and the popular legend that later grew up around him as a purely Christian crusading hero obscures a far stranger and more interesting real career. This book follows the documented life behind the legend: his rise at the Castilian court of Fernando I and Sancho II, his forced exile under King Alfonso VI, and his subsequent years as a paid commander for the Muslim taifa kings of Zaragoza, fighting on their behalf against Christian Aragon and Barcelona. It traces his transformation from exiled vassal into an independent warlord commanding his own multi-confessional company, his patient campaign to control the Levantine coast, and his eventual conquest and pragmatic governance of Valencia, where he preserved Islamic law for his Muslim subjects while installing a Christian bishop. Along the way, the book uses Rodrigo's career to explain a broader eleventh-century Iberian world of shifting loyalties, tribute payments, and fluid alliances that had little to do with religious lines. A final, distinct section turns from history to memory, examining how the documented mercenary of the Historia Roderici became the idealized hero of the Cantar de Mio Cid a century later, and precisely where that beloved poem departs from the evidence. The result is less a single biography than two books in one: the reconstructable life, and the invented hero built from it.
