About this ebook

“Sunrise on the Reaping is a propulsive, heart-wrenching addition to The Hunger Games, adding welcome texture to the cruel world of Panem ... This is the project of dystopian fiction: to shine a light in tyranny's greasiest corners and show how people - ordinary, determined human beings - might take it apart” - New York Times

“Collins is an excellent writer, and there are moments of surprising lyricism ... Sunrise on the Reaping contains enough both to snare new readers and to satisfy the most bloodthirsty fan” - Guardian

“A brutal, tender tale that adds depth to the franchise, weaving pertinent themes of misinformation and propaganda around the thrills and action.” - The Observer

When you've been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honour of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town.

As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

The book itself is fine, I think I'd enjoy it more if it wasn't a Hunger Games book. I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have though because it reads like it's supposed to be adapted into a film, whereas the other books actually felt like books. Firstly, the book wasn't very subtle in its messaging like the other books were and very much beats you over the head with its themes. And not just that, even Lenore Dove. We know Haymitch loves her but WHY does he love her? We never spend any time with her to really get to know her. Second, I feel like Haymitch's characterization doesn't fit with his character in the trilogy. Thirdly, why were there so many character cameos? This isn't Marvel. Honourable mention to The Raven poem because it got to a point where I was just skipping excerpts because it repeats the poem about four times in the span of a chapter. I did enjoy Maysilee though, she was great and is possibly the only reason I'm giving this two stars instead of one.

The bottom of many of the pages were cut off making them impossible to see. My advice is to get the book from someone other than Google. Might have given 5 stars if I had been able to actually read all of it

Suzanne Collin's is forever my favourite author. The way she writes immedietly incaptivates me, her stories, her characters, her plot twists. Despite Haymitch's games being mentioned in the Hunger games trilogy, many details still came out to be a surprise which I really enjoyed. My heart was constantly breaking alongside Haymitch as Collin's knows how to create loveable or memorable characters each with their own personalities. The hunger games is especially relevent in society as of 2025 with everything going on around the world, hence another reason why these masterpieces should be cherished and adored.
