About this ebook

Complete and unabridged, with 59 full-page plates by William Orpen, Spencer Gore and Robert Bevan. An English writer of comfortable opinions watches the war take his son and his certainties, in a novel published in 1916 while it was still going on. Wells wrote it fast and it sold better than anything else he did; Maxim Gorky called it the finest book written about the war. This edition binds 59 plates of painting with the text, among them works by Algernon Talmage, George Clausen and William Bruce Ellis Ranken, alongside one restored and coloured in-text illustration.
