About this ebook

When mother’s own milk is not available, WHO recommends the feeding of donor human milk for feeding of preterm or low-birth-weight infants. Donor human milk should come from an established human milk bank. WHO and UNICEF have developed this Implementation Guidance document to provide operational insights to help guide the development and expansion of safe human milk banking systems as part of a comprehensive strategy and programmes to support and protect breastfeeding. The guidance explores the models of human milk banking and key considerations and priorities in establishing milk banking systems in a variety of settings. The target audience includes ministries of health and programmatic teams consisting of policymakers, donors, programme planners, professional associations, and nongovernmental organizations.
