About this ebook

Most writing books tell you how it's done. Fiction Unboxed shows you.

Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant wrote a novel from scratch in thirty days, in public, with every email, every story meeting, every draft captured along the way. They started without knowing their story, their characters, or even their genre. They committed to publishing the final draft before the month was over. And they invited their readers to watch the whole thing happen.

Fiction Unboxed is the documentary of that month. The breakthroughs, the dead ends, the arguments, the late-night revisions, the moments when neither of them knew if it would actually come together. Every molecule of the process, captured as it happened.

Inside, you'll see:

How two co-authors actually work together when the deadline is real and the stakes are public

Where ideas come from when you start with a blank page and thirty days

How characters and plots emerge without an outline, and when to let them

Draft, revise, and ship a novel in a month without compromising the work

Story meetings, decisions, and creative arguments that shape a book before anyone sees it

If you've read every craft book on the market and you want to see what writing a novel actually looks like in practice, this is the only book that hands you that view.

Pair with Write. Publish. Repeat. for the business of indie publishing, The Fiction Formula for the systems behind a sustainable fiction career, and The Compounding Author for the mindset that keeps it going.

Includes the free Fiction Unboxed Workbook with 48 pages of exercises, planning tools, and reflection prompts to help you write and publish your own book in 30 days.

Stop reading about how novels get written. Watch one come together. Fiction Unboxed.

About the author

Sean M. Platt has written over 200 books, built multiple businesses, and spent seventeen years learning the difference between publishing and building — mostly by doing it wrong first.

He is the co-author of Write. Publish. Repeat., the bestselling book on self-publishing; co-host of The Smarter Artist Show; and founder of the IP consulting firm Where the X Goes. He believes the best creative careers are engineered, not hustled, and that the most valuable thing most creators own is something they haven't looked at closely enough yet.

Sean lives in Austin with his wife Cindy, who keeps him disciplined, and their dog Fisher, who does not. When he's not writing books, designing funnels, making music, or hanging out with Cindy, you can probably find him in the Think Tank — his daily bath, where most of the ideas in this book were born. No bubbles. Just hot water and his dangling participles.

Johnny B. Truant is the bestselling author of Fat Vampire, adapted by SyFy as "Reginald the Vampire" starring Spider-Man's Jacob Batalon. His other books include Pretty Killer, Pattern Black, Invasion, The Beam, Dead City, and over 100 other titles across many genres.

Originally from Ohio, Johnny and his family now live in Austin, Texas, where he’s finally surrounded by creative types as weird as he is. His website at JohnnyBTruant.com features his Creator Diary, additional works, fan extras, behind-the-scenes peeks, early access, and a whole lot more.
