About this ebook

‘Lesbians versus zombies on a steam-punk Titanic . . . seriously addictive, dark and bitingly well-written’ – Grimdark Magazine

Death waits beneath the waves as two estranged lovers face their demons . . .

Sergeant Nix Marr left her dark past buried beneath the sea. Then Kessandra, the people’s favourite princess and Nix’s much-loathed ex, recruits Nix for a covert mission. Their goal: to investigate a massacre in the underwater city of Fall. Nix refuses, but still finds herself boarding a luxurious submersible as Kessandra’s bodyguard. After all, Kess always gets what she wants.

As they descend to the city, Kessandra reveals the chilling truth: they aren’t investigating a massacre, but the trigger that caused it – a sickness that turns victims into mindless killers. And when a royal passenger is murdered, it’s clear the infection is on board and no one is safe. Soon trusting Kessandra, despite her lies, will become Nix’s only hope.

From the Sunday Times bestselling author Rebecca Thorne, This Gilded Abyss is an intense, utterly thrilling science fiction adventure for fans of Arcane, BioShock and Tamsyn Muir's The Locked Tomb.

I honestly did not really enjoy this one. This was more like a zombie apocalypse novel than anything else. Also the two MCs were just insufferable. I tired of Nix's whining and complaining and Kessandra's perceived machinations and arrogance. I didn't feel the chemistry between both of them. The enemies to lovers plot wasn't very strong since the animosity felt weak and the attraction felt insta even if it was slow burn. Nix was really annoying since she never seemed to do anything right. For a senior veteran soldier, she panics easily in the face of danger and is constantly distracted, afraid of basically everything and constantly ruminating. Towards the end of the book I didn't really care what happens to her. And why not just chop off the infected's head instead of slicing and stabbing arms, legs and chests? That's how to kill a zombie as far as the established and accepted lore goes. Things got a little engaging near the end but by then I was struggling to finish the book; it just wasn't all that exciting anymore. The overall premise was very interesting and entertaining but the zombie epidemic plot and Nix's total ineptitude dampened everything else. If you haven't read this book, by all means read it. I'm probably in the minority with my opinions, but it just didn't vibe with me.
