The first half builds the science step by step: temperature and the zeroth law, work and heat, the first law for closed systems and for steady-flow devices such as nozzles, turbines, compressors and throttling valves, then the second law, Carnot cycle and theorem, thermodynamic temperature, entropy, availability, Maxwell relations and the third law.
The book then moves to applications: Otto, Diesel, Dual and Brayton cycles, the simple Rankine cycle, vapour-compression and air refrigeration (Bell-Coleman), followed by a full treatment of heat engines. Topics include IC engine components and terminology, four-stroke and two-stroke operation, valve and port timing, fuels and fuel injection, carburetion, ignition systems, combustion in SI and CI engines, knocking, testing and performance, cooling and lubrication, and reciprocating, rotary and axial-flow compressors.
For revision, the book closes with VTU question papers and two-mark question-and-answer banks covering thermodynamics, heat engines, and fluid mechanics and machinery.
