Change or die!

Centuries ago, on planet Jeep, a deadly virus killed the men and forever altered the few surviving women. Now, generations after the colony lost touch with humanity, a corporation arrives to exploit Jeep's resources - and its forces find themselves fighting for their lives.

Anthropologist Marghe Taishan arrives to test a new vaccine. She risks death to uncover the native women's biological secret, and finds that she is changing too. Marghe realises that not only has she found a home on Jeep, but she alone carries the seeds of its destruction...

Ammonite is an unforgettable novel that questions the very meaning of gender and humanity. As readers share in a journey through an alien world, they too embark on a parallel journey of fascinating self-exploration.

Exploratory fiction. Flows beautifully, easy to read with rich language. The story is fun enough just for the read, but there's a lot more there too. The science isn't wrong, but it's a bit over romanticised for my liking at times. What made the biggest impression was that in a story with a cast of thousands, including a dozen major characters, where not one of them was male, not one of those thousands, I never felt the absence... Except perhaps in that the story had one less predator.

Mesmerising. I was drawn into the fascinating world of Jeep and its unique possibilities; the dilemmas and struggles of the lead characters and the astonishing courage of the main protagonist Marghe. It is a journey of self-discovery, for her and for many of the other characters. Though the premise is science-fiction, the lives and relationships played out on the harsh and beautiful world of Jeep are very real. I didn't want it to end.

Very disappointing. Read like an amateur's effort. Clumsy dialogue, derivative storyline. I couldn't make it past the first quarter.
