The book is presented as the first Assamese book published entirely through a Unicode-based digital publishing workflow, demonstrating how Assamese text can be created, typeset, published, searched, preserved, and reused using modern Unicode and OpenType technologies.
The book examines how Assamese text is represented, shaped, rendered, published, searched, preserved, and reused in digital environments. It looks at the limitations of older font-based workflows and discusses the role of Unicode, OpenType, glyph substitution, glyph positioning, shaping engines, and modern publishing software in creating a more sustainable digital Assamese publishing workflow.
At the centre of the project is Kaushtav Akhor, an Assamese Unicode/OpenType typeface developed by the author. Rather than treating the typeface only as a visual design project, the book uses it as a practical application of Unicode-based Assamese publishing, with particular attention to textual preservation, machine-readable text, searchability, interoperability, and textual reusability.
The book also examines the history and technical context surrounding Assamese digital typography, including legacy fonts and publishing systems, Unicode migration, OpenType technology, and the relationship between underlying character data and its visual representation.
A significant part of the work is experimental: the author uses Kaushtav Akhor to typeset the book itself, turning the publication into a practical demonstration of a Unicode-based Assamese publishing workflow.
Written entirely in Assamese, this book is intended for readers interested in Assamese language and typography, typeface design, digital publishing, Unicode, language technology, and the preservation of Assamese text in the digital age.
A study of Assamese typography, a technical investigation into Unicode publishing, and a practical experiment in building a more sustainable digital workflow for Assamese text.
