Poor by standards of previous titles. The first Grisham not to grip me and want to read end to end in one hit. Just a formulaic plod to the end in a boring plot that doesn't develop or lead anywhere other than to an obvious and anti climactic conclusion, no legalese elements, no empathy by me for the characters. Disappointing and for me rather low brow with a side order of boredom! References and inclusion to/of "The Firm" pointless and lead nowhere or in any way add to or develop the storyline, its appear thrown in to hook readers who know the history and just becomes padding. If this was your 1st time read of a Grisham book, you wouldn't have a clue what this part plays, or not, in this book at least.

Touting this as a sequel to The Firm is a marketing gimmick. It could work just as well with any character other than Mitch McDeere. The connection to The Firm is superficial and unnecessary. While the pace is good, the twist that you might expect never materialised. Overall, an Okay read but John Grisham has stopped being in my "Must-Read" list long before The Exchange and I can clearly see why.
