About this ebook

Italian Fantasies is a glittering, unsettling journey through Italy and the mind of Israel Zangwill, where travel writing becomes cultural satire, literary meditation, and philosophical argument. From Naples, Rome, Venice, Sicily, and Mantua, the book ranges across art, politics, religion, history, and modern life, using Italy as a stage on which saints, doges, poets, and politicians reveal the contradictions of civilization. Its essays move from reverent reflection to sharp irony: Milton is admired as a poet of blended classical, Christian, and Catholic influences; religion is seen as a universal human impulse toward saints, miracles, and sacred objects; and death is stripped of funerary pomp to expose its harsher truth. The book then turns fiercely political, tracing Machiavelli's legacy in Cromwell, modern statecraft, empire, and business, while challenging the idea that power alone defines greatness. Alongside this, it exposes hypocrisy in public language and examines Lucrezia Borgia as proof that history is always unstable, partial, and shaped by legend. Witty, erudite, and provocative, this is a brilliant meditation on belief, power, and the stories civilizations tell themselves. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Israel Zangwill was a British-Jewish writer, dramatist, and social thinker born in London in 1864 to immigrant parents from Eastern Europe, and his life was shaped by the energy, tensions, and possibilities of modern urban existence. Educated at the Jews' Free School and later at the University of London, he became a gifted journalist, essayist, novelist, and playwright, earning wide attention for his sharp wit, psychological insight, and willingness to confront the social questions of his age. He was especially important as a commentator on Jewish identity, assimilation, nationalism, gender, poverty, and the pressures of modern society, and his writing often moves between irony and compassion as it examines people caught between tradition and change. Zangwill's work helped bring Jewish life and immigrant experience into mainstream English literature, while also engaging with broader debates about cosmopolitanism, belonging, and the search for justice. His themes remain strikingly relevant today because questions of identity, migration, prejudice, and cultural hybridity are still central to public life. He is remembered as a lively, provocative, and humane voice whose fiction and criticism capture the complexities of modern identity with unusual clarity. Readers who enjoy socially engaged literature, urban realism, and intellectually spirited prose will find Zangwill especially rewarding.
