About this ebook

Discover the beauty of Portugal with the country’s most famous 20th-century author, Fernando Pessoa. From a tourist guide to the sights of Lisbon to his prize-winning poetry collection Mensagem, this anthology brings together a selection of Pessoa’s most captivating poetry and prose.

Gifted, mysterious and many-faceted, Fernando Pessoa wrote in both English and Portuguese. Mensagem, a cycle of vivid and expressive poetry, is the only collection Pessoa published in his native language. The best of Pessoa’s English poetry is also included in this anthology, exploring existential questions of life and love alongside comic characters and even Pessoa’s take on Shakespearean sonnets.

In ‘Lisbon: What the Tourist Should See’ Pessoa provides a wonderfully observed walking guide for visitors to Lisbon wanting to learn about the city's key monuments and sites of interest. Mensagem & Other Writings is perfect for established Pessoa fans as well as curious readers wanting to discover this giant of Portuguese literature.

This edition is part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library, a series of stunning pocket-sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover.

About the author

Fernando Pessoa was born in Lisbon in 1888. As a young child he moved to Durban, South Africa, where he was educated and learnt English. After a decade Pessoa sailed back to Portugal, settling in Lisbon. He subsequently began work as a translator, and published poetry, prose and criticism. Though he had been interested in inventing different characters and identities since childhood, it was with his first published poem in 1914 that Pessoa started creating a range of literary identities. These became known as Pessoa’s ‘heteronyms’: he penned works under their names and constructed full biographies for each one. Though not all his writing played with authorial identity in this way, his now-famous work The Book of Disquiet does. Pessoa died in 1935 and has now garnered a reputation as one of Portugal’s best-known writers.
