Acerca de este libro electrónico
The second part shifts focus to key thinkers such as Erasmus Darwin and Lamarck, analyzing their philosophies through extensive quotations from works like Zoonomia and Philosophie Zoologique. Butler corrects misconceptions about Lamarck, clarifying his philosophical position and evolutionary framework. He also considers the contributions of Patrick Matthew, the Geoffroy Saint-Hilaires, and Herbert Spencer. The later chapters compare Lamarckian evolution with Darwin’s theory, critiquing the ambiguities and limitations of “natural selection.” Ultimately, Butler seeks to reconcile the “old” and “new” theories, offering a refreshed perspective on the meaning and direction of evolution.
