The story's roots in Poe's own life are fascinating. In his late teens, Poe had actually been stationed as a soldier at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island — the very setting of The Gold-Bug. Beyond the setting, Poe had a well-documented passion for codes and ciphers. In the early 1840s, he publicly challenged readers of a Philadelphia magazine to send him encrypted messages that he could not solve, boldly claiming that human ingenuity could crack any code that human ingenuity had created. The Gold-Bug was his most elaborate demonstration of that belief.
