About this ebook

The mysterious Tarot Slayer is loose in Red City.

The body of Ragnar’s dad was posed like an image from a tarot deck – the Slayer’s calling card.

Ragnar got the news after an outlaw biker gang of evil werewolves hunted him down, forcing him and his band to cancel their tour. Ravaged with grief and burning rage, he must return to Red City to hunt down his father’s killer while dodging the bikers.

In a corrupt city like Red City, there are too many suspects who wanted his dad dead. All Ragnar has is his rune magic and a few enthusiastic friends to aid his investigation. However, the Tarot Slayer is more predator than prey.

It's a game of cat and mouse with a serial killer. And there’s no prize for second best. There’s only death and a twisted corpse. Inexperienced at detective work, underpowered, and distracted by grief, Ragnar must bring down the Tarot Slayer or become the next body warped into a tarot card archetype…

I know I'll be engrossed in a wonderfully gritty story whenever I open a book by C Thomas Lafollette. Road To Rune had me excited just from the blurb because it's a spin-off from the author's Red City Reaper series and I love those stories. This book did not disappoint! It starts with some really emotional scenes. I was able to feel Ragnar's pain because the writing was so empathetic and words felt like they had been carefully chosen to maximise that connection. It was a good introduction to new characters and a reconnect with old ones - I liked how that felt as if the familiar characters were an active bridge between series. Ragnar's rune magic was impressive and something new to me. He's a very talented practitioner which made for clever applications. He admits himself to be short on practice so I can't wait to see which direction and how far he takes his magic when he does put in the work. The frequent cameos by Judy/Sarah/Cat were so intriguing. What a fascinating introduction to a new character. I hope she comes back in future stories because she sparks so many reactions in others with her niggling and sneakiness. I love a strong woman with a mission and the skills to carry it out. This author always uses the found family trope, which I really appreciate. The group in Road To Rune are loyal, funny and snarky. Just brilliant! This is a gripping beginning to a new series and I absolutely enjoyed every page (that ending....I didn't see it coming but it indpired a bit of gleeful apprehension). Looking forward to more.
