About this ebook

The novelist explains how he actually worked - the hours before breakfast, the words counted, the money each book earned, set out in a table. Published after his death, it did his reputation forty years of damage, because gentlemen were not supposed to admit writing for wages. This edition is bound with sixty plates of paintings, among them works by John Jackson, William Powell Frith and Charles Landseer, and includes the translator's text.
