The astonishing true story that changed America.
In 1841, Solomon Northup was a free Black man living with his family in New York when he was deceived, kidnapped, and sold into slavery in the American South. For the next twelve years, he endured unimaginable cruelty, hardship, and injustice while struggling to preserve his dignity, identity, and hope for freedom.
First published in 1853, 12 Years a Slave is one of the most powerful and influential firsthand accounts of slavery ever written. Northup’s vivid narrative offers an unflinching portrait of life on plantations in Louisiana and stands as an essential testimony to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of oppression.
Both a gripping personal memoir and a vital historical document, this American classic continues to illuminate the realities of slavery and the enduring fight for freedom, justice, and human rights.
