Meguri is a Japanese minimal watch face whose second hand runs the artwork.
△ THE SECOND RUNS THE TRIANGLE
There is no round second hand. A bead of ink travels the outline of the sumi triangle
instead, once round every minute — up at the apex, down the long left stroke, along the
base, then back up the dry broken flank where the brush ran out of ink. It moves the way a
second hand moves, so you can watch it go; it simply goes somewhere else. The brush stroke
stops being the scenery and becomes the track.
⊙ THE TIME IS WHERE YOU EXPECT IT
Hour and minute are ordinary matte batons over twelve markers. There is nothing to learn
and nothing to decode: you read this face the way you read any watch, and the running bead
is the part you watch when you have a moment to spare.
◻ INK, PAPER AND GEOMETRY
Washi paper, one dry sumi triangle left open on its right flank, a thin circle, a soft grey
ink stain with two ruled lines across it, and three small accents. Twelve markers, a line
and a dot each, doubled at twelve. No text and no logo is drawn on the dial.
◑ SIX PAPERS — THE COLOURS OF A DAY
Mahiru, midday, on bleached paper in full sun. Asagiri, morning mist, in pale blue-grey.
Kohaku, amber. Kakishibu, the deep orange-brown of persimmon-tannin dyed paper. Yoi, early
evening in blue-green. Tsukikage, moonlight, on blue-black — the paper it arrives on.
Paper, ink and accents are recoloured together and the six run in order across a day. On
the two dark papers the hands turn ivory, and the bead changes its own ink on every paper
so it never loses itself against the sheet or against the stroke it crosses.
◎ TWO DATA WINDOWS
The upper one sits inside the thin circle the artist drew — the ring is the bezel, so the
data belongs to the picture rather than sitting on top of it. The lower one rests on a disc
of washi paper in the open space below. Steps and battery to begin with; assign heart
rate, weather, a date, a shortcut or anything else your watch provides. Their ink comes
in five colours — sumi, vermilion, indigo, ochre and moss.
◷ ANALOG OR DIGITAL
Ordinary hands, or the time set INSIDE the stroke: h:mm in the space the brush enclosed,
with nothing laid under it. The triangle becomes the frame, and the bead keeps lapping it,
so the digits sit inside a moving border. A small line above them carries AM/PM and the
seconds, the seconds in the same colour the bead wears on that paper. The display follows
your watch's own 12-hour or 24-hour setting, and AM/PM simply goes away on a 24-hour one.
◔ SIZED TO TASTE
Large, medium, small — or off entirely, leaving nothing but paper, ink and the bead going
round.
🌙 AMBIENT MODE
The dial gives way to black: hollow hands over dim markers, and nothing else. The time
still reads while the display draws almost nothing, and the bead rests until you look.
